An Indulgent Morning

Couzin's Cafe on UrbanspoonThere’s something that feels both naughty and nice about going out for breakfast.  Naughty perhaps because A.) You know you could cook most (all??) of these foods pretty easily and B.) You know that you shouldn’t be indulging in a lot of these menu items. Nice because A.) It feels good to be pampered and taken care of by someone else and B.) Having the time to slow down and spend some time enjoying a meal feels indulgent and nurturing.

I love going out for a leisurely breakfast. My favorite breakfast places are usually the ones where breakfast booze is an option, but even without a morning cocktail, I love breakfast. And I love trying new breakfast joints which is how we ended up at Couzin’s Café in Kirkland this morning.

The restaurant is a small, hole-in-the-wall kind of joint located in a strip mall on the south side of 85TH in Kirkland. We got to Couzin’s Café around 10 and waited 10-15 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, our order was taken within 10 minutes and our food arrived about 20 minutes after that.  We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs and the Swedish Pancakes, planning to share both breakfasts.

Hash BrownsThe Chicken Fried Steak was good. The exterior was crispy, the gravy was nice and thick, and the eggs (scrambled) weren’t over cooked. The Swedish pancakes were delicious. I actually ordered some extra lingonberry jam because I thought that the pancakes only had a little on top, like a garnish. I soon realized that the crepes had jam inside them too, so the extra jam I ordered was a bit of overkill.

I liked this little café quite a bit. The service was friendly, the portions were generous, and the food tasted good. I wasn’t all that impressed with the location though- there is no waiting area or lobby so guests stand next to tables with diners trying to eat their meals. There is also no buffer between the open door and the main dining area so a cold wind blows in every time someone opens the door. Even with those detractions  there were quite a few people waiting for a table the entire time we were there, so this is obviously a spot that’s earned a lot of customer loyalty.
