My dad and I try to have lunch about once a month, if he’s in town. We’ve been to a number of restaurants in and around downtown Bellevue and I’m always looking for something new to try. Today, I decided that my dad and I should go to Evolution Fresh, in Bellevue Square, for lunch.
Evolution Fresh is a healthy-food restaurant. They make fresh fruit and vegetable juices, sell premade sandwiches and salads, and you can create an entrée of sorts by picking what vegetables, grains, and proteins you would like them to mix in a bowl. I wasn’t hungry, so I ordered a 16 oz Green Julep (Greens, Pineapple, Organic Apple, Mint). My father ordered their tomato soup, and then built an entrée. He decided he wanted something hot, so he asked them if they could heat his entrée. They said that they could, by adding broth or steaming it. I think he misunderstood what they were saying, so he said to do both.
You know how the phrase “health food” will make most people pull a face? When you think of health food, you think of tasteless goop that makes life not quite worth living longer for. Unfortunately, this was our experience at Evolution Fresh. My juice was fine (not fine enough to warrant a $8+ price), but the stuff my dad ordered was pretty foul. His entree came out looking like a stew, but a flavorless stew. We found out that adding broth to a bunch of raw ingredients neither cooks the ingredients nor melds the flavors. The tomato soup he ordered on the side tasted like pureed tomatoes- no seasoning, no herbs, no complexity at all. To add insult to injury, the whole meal came to $25 not including tax or tip. Needless to say, we won’t be back, and I think I’ll have a hard time talking him into another “healthy” option for lunch now.
